For this Airstream solar project, we pushed the boundaries by installing an impressive 1600W of solar panels, utilizing a unique racking system to maximize roof space like never before. This innovative approach allowed us to fit more solar power on an Airstream than has ever been done before, giving the owners unmatched off-grid capability. Paired with three 460Ah Epoch lithium batteries, this system provides a powerhouse of energy storage, ensuring they can enjoy extended adventures without relying on hookups or generators.
Solar System Goals
Run 1 , possibly two ACs
Enough battery to run an AC all night
Enough solar to keep it charged, we did the best we could here.
Where to put those batteries?
For this Airstream project, we installed three 460Ah Epoch lithium batteries to provide robust energy storage and long-lasting power. These batteries were selected for their exceptional capacity and ability to handle the demands of off-grid living. The Epoch batteries offer high performance, reliability, and a long lifespan, making them ideal for powering everything from appliances to air conditioning. By choosing these high-capacity lithium batteries, we ensured the owners have ample power reserves to support extended stays off-grid without worrying about recharging. The batteries were strategically placed to maximize available space while maintaining easy access for future maintenance, ensuring a seamless integration with the overall solar system.

1600 Watts of Solar
For this Airstream solar project, we meticulously researched the best way to install eight 200W solar panels while maximizing the limited roof space. After careful consideration, we chose the Unirac solar racking system for its durability, flexibility, and ability to securely mount the panels on the curved surface of the Airstream. The unique design of the Unirac system allowed us to install 1600W of solar—more than ever before on an Airstream—without compromising the aesthetics or aerodynamics of the trailer. The installation process went smoothly, and the racking system provided a sturdy foundation for the panels, ensuring they are securely mounted and optimized for solar collection. Overall, the system exceeded our expectations and delivered a clean, reliable solution that will serve the owners well for years to come.
